Welcome to the web site for the First Essex and Middlesex Coalition of the Democratic Party of Massachusetts.

Updated September 25, 2007

Welcome to new visitors to the site.

Hope your summer has been going well. We're getting going for the fall. Contact Vice-Chair: Patrick Abegg with any items of interest on suggestions.

At our August meeting, the Marianne Rutter from Boxford introduced us to their postcards. These are fantastic communication devices targeted at specific populations. Here are the postcards for college students, new Democratic voters, and young voters. All of these files are PDF files. If you want the Microsoft Publisher versions, please e-mail us with your request. Marianne sent the following instructions with them:

Attached are the documents from which our postcards were produced.  "College students" was sent to unregistered 18-year olds who've graduated from HS; "young voters" was sent to unregistered 18-year olds who are rising HS seniors, and "welcome Democrats" was sent to all newly-registered Democrats since last year.

As for paper stock, I just specified white card stock to the printer; that should get you a heavy enough (but still readily available) paper weight for a postcard.
You'll note the card is designed "four up" -- that is, four to a page, landscape orientation.  This requires an extra step on the printer's part (cutting the cards), but it means you can divide your mailing list number by four when specifying printing quantity.  The cutting process is cheaper than printing four times as many cards, one at a time.

Currently the major activity for our town and ward committees is the nomination papers for the committees that will all be elected next March at the presidential primary. Town and city clerks should have received the papers and they can be picked up at any town hall.

Here's our meeting schedule for the rest of 2007:

Wednesday, September 26, 2007

Thursday, October 25, 2007

Tuesday, December 4, 2007

The Calendar is currently out of date and will be updated soon.

Likewise the What's New page is out of date.

Chair: Elizabeth Kilcoyne, Ipswich

Vice-Chair: Patrick Abegg, Gloucester

Treasurer: Kathy Pasquina, West Newbury

We've added the current draft of our talking points as a web page here and as a Word document.

Our campaign cards are available directly from Simard Printing at (781) 932-8885 (contact Amy).

Still available on the web site: our famous coalition brochure (PDF file). This is a two-sided color document designed to be folded in three for use as a hand-out (or a leave-behind).

Every Democrat should subscribe to Arthur Powell's e-mail newsletter, the North Shore Democratic Update, which contains news, a calendar, and other important information. Arthur is a State Committeeman from Beverly, a great friend of Democrats in this district, and can be contacted at arthurpowell@hotmail.com.

We are a collaboration of the local Democratic Town and City Committees in the seventeen communities that form the First Essex and Middlesex district in the State Senate, as defined by the 2001 redistricting legislation.

The website name, "massdems1EM.org" is a combination of the state party website "massdems.org" with the standard abbreviation of the First Essex and Middlesex district, 1EM.

We were formed to create a unified Democratic party organization to support the 2004 campaigns for President, U.S. Congress, State Senator, and State Representative. We will continue to build the organization for the 2006 elections.

The district includes the following towns:

Boxford
Essex
Georgetown
Gloucester
Groveland
Hamilton
Ipswich
Manchester-by-the-Sea
Middleton
Newbury
North Andover (precincts 2, 3, 5, 7)
North Reading
Rockport
Rowley
Wenham
West Newbury
Wilmington

Reading is part of the extended 1EM community although they're outside of the district.
